Have you missed me?
I must say it is so GOOD to be back! I’ve missed writing to you and sharing my knowledge on home office business success with powerful marketing articles. I can assure you that this web hosting migration took longer then expected.
Through out this experience, I’ve learned to dot my I’s and cross my T’s sooner rather then later and never ever wait for the last minute.
I take full responsibility that I should have been more prepared and not take things for granted.
During the time of this entire blog migration experience, I wrote this article to share with you some helpful tips should you ever experience a similar situation:
1. Back up your articles
I cannot stress this enough! You must back up your files even if you are not considering changing hosting companies anytime soon. I should have realized that my blog/website would continue to grow, and had I backed up my files, the transition would have been so much smoother.
Solution: There are many plugins out there that can help you with this backup process. If you’re not sure, you can always ask the hosting manager to send you a back up of your files.
2. Back up your images
Not backing up your images is a disaster waiting to happen (especially if you have many articles that are related to your images).
Solution: Even if you have your images stored on your hard drive, it is important you make a back up. Just like the article files, you should back up your image files as well. Then, all you need to do is upload the back up file into the C-panel portal of your new hosting company. I learned this one the hard way.
3. Know which hosting platform to choose
Even if you feel you’re not going to move your blog anywhere anytime soon, knowing which hosting platforms to choose is a must! I spent countless hours searching and making phone calls comparing which hosting company would work best for my blog goals.
Solution: The time it takes for you to find out which hosting company to go with could be minimized if you know what to select ahead of time. Comparing prices and selecting a reputable hosting company for my blog could have been easier had I known in advance.
With so many plugins offered through WordPress, you will forget what worked for your blog if you don’t remember which ones you’ve installed.
Solution: Make a list of all the plugins that are working for your blog. That way, you can install them once your new hosting becomes active via WordPress again. Not sure if a backup can be made on plugins, but I certainly wasn’t taking any chances.
5. Don’t underestimate your blog’s growth
I knew that my hard work would eventually pay off. What I didn’t know, was that for the past 9 years my blog was being hosted on a shared web hosting platform (I didn’t do my research correctly) which did not offer options for upgrading to a cloud or vps.
It also didn’t help that I was given 2 weeks to find another hosting company. Apparently, I had outgrown their shared web hosting as my blog was generating far too much traffic, and using way to many resources.
Solution: If you work hard on your blog and you’re consistent with the content on it, then it too will grow. Choose a hosting company that can offer cloud hosting, vps, or even consider a dedicated server of your own from the get go to avoid these issues.
On the other hand, I’m so grateful that my blog is growing and that this experience has taught me a lot.
I am so happy to be back. I look forward to writing and updating my blog’s content for you. I’m so sorry it took me this long to figure it all out…live and learn…right?
Thank you for hanging in there with me as I continue to iron out all the kinks! 🙂
