Keywords, meta descriptions, meta tags are all important factors for search engine optimization and website exposure. The question is once you have accomplished optimizing your site, you need to offer a reason for your customers to visit!

Where are your customers?

To maintain a lucrative home based business you need to think outside of the box. Running a home based business is challenging; I’m sure we all know that much. However, going the “extra mile” so to speak is essential to stand out from the crowd.

Answering the questions below will jump start you in the right path:

What are you doing to be unique?
- Everyone now a days is starting an online business, so it is imperative that you create a business that is unique and offers benefits to the customers. Whether you’re a writer, publisher, consultant or sell products/services, competition will always be a factor. Standing out from the rest is not only necessary but required for success!

How are you acquiring new customers?
- It goes without saying that in order for people to find your website/blog your ranking in the search engines is an important factor. Word of mouth, advertising, networking are all essential elements to promoting your business as well.

How are you keeping your current customers happy?
- Are you providing your current customers benefits to stay? For instance, if you’re selling a product/service, you may want to offer customers something for FREE when they place an order at your site. Everyone loves to receive FREE stuff, especially if they spent their hard earn money on your products. Perhaps you can offer them a discount on future purchases. If you have a newsletter offer a free gift when they sign up and provide you with their email addresses.

If you’re maintaining a blog, is your content of value? Will your readers leave learning something new and want to return for more?

How are you marketing your business to attain new customers?
-Building on a solid marketing plan is essential to any business. Customers can be anyone from your next door neighbor to your supermarket package handler…customers are everywhere!

Find out what customers really want!
-What do customers really want? When you receive emails from customers asking questions about your business, respond as soon as possible. DO NOT wait a week to reply. Read How to create customer loyalty and 6 steps to improve customer loyalty. Two great articles!

Finally, encourage your customers each and every way by providing the best customer service and unique experience that only YOU can provide in your own creative style and personality. Customers are what break or make your business. Treat them right always and keep an opened ear and heart. Best of luck with your business endeavors!

In this post, Tim Koen writes about “Keyword & Meta Description Tags”!

Keyword and description meta tags optimization tutorial for better search engine rankings. Have you ever wondered why some web pages get higher search engine rankings than others? Of course you have, if you are a web developer. You may have read or heard of a hundred ways to improve your page ranking and tried them all. Only to see dismal results and wonder what the heck went wrong.

Been there and done that. So I thought I would let you in on the secrets I use to get my pages to rank high in the search engines. Once you read these tricks you might think that is so obvious I should have thought of it.

Here are the 10 rules I use to search engine optimize a page for keywords and description meta tags.

1. First let’s assume that you already know what the page is about and have already created it. This is not a tutorial on how to write web pages. Rather guidelines for search engine optimization using your meta keywords and description tags.

Depending on the type of page you are creating determines how many keywords you should use. For instance a sales letter is typically 2000 or more words. In that type of page you need to describe all the advantages of your product and why it is the right solution. You will want to get testimonials and place them in appropiate places. You may even want to tell a story relating to how well the product has performed. Don’t over do the page or you will lose your prospect to boredom.

The product page (different from the sales letter) should be between 500 and 750 words. All you are trying to do here is sell a product. Visitors that make it to these pages probably already know what they are looking for and are only looking for specific information. Your job is to convince them that your product is the right one. Beyond that and there is more opportunity for your visitors to disagree with your pitch and move on.

The article page should be at least 1000 words and not more than 5000 words. Okay some might say that 5000 is too long and others have said that isn’t 1000 words aren’t enough words to describe what they have to say. Too long - some say that 500 words is good for an article page. So lets look at this: a person who can read 10 words a second will be through your page in 50 seconds. Not enough time for them to soak up your message. A person reading 3 words a second will take about 2-1/2 minutes. Plenty of time for your message to sink in.

The average reader can read somewhere around 6 words per second. Which would take them 83 seconds to read your 500 word article. Barely enough time to get your visitors comfortable. At 1000 words the avearge reader will read your page in roughly 3 minutes. At 6 words a second your reader needs around 3 minutes to read a 1000 word article. This plenty of time for the reader to make a decision to click on your most wanted response.

At over 2000 words the average reader will need 5-1/2 minutes to get through it. This is stretching the limit of time most visitors will spend reading one web page. At 5000 words the average reader takes over 13 minutes to read your page. This is well past the amount of time a visitor will need to decide to click on your most wanted response. If your article is really good most people will read all the way through it. If not they are off to the next website in a flash. If you have more than 2000 words you may want to consider breaking the article into 2 pages.

Okay, back to rule #1 use the right amount of words for a particular type of page. Not too many and not too few.

2. Primary meta keyword (the first one) must be an exact match with the file name of your page. This lets the search engines match up your keyword with your page and give your page higher relevancy. Here is an example from: Ocular Defense Formula (Pr2 and #2 in Google). The first keyword for this page is “Ocular Defense Formula.” This seemingly obsure product gets 33,000+ search engine results in Google alone. So it is not that obscure after all. And makes for a good example.

3. Use only 5 keywords in your meta keywords tag. More than that and the search engines might think you are keyword spamming and won’t list your page. The search engines rank your keywords in the order that they appear. This makes the first one the primary keyword and the second one a secondary keyword and so on. You should line your keywords up in the order of relevance to the page. Here is the meta keyword tag I used in this example.

“Ocular Defense Formula, Lutein, Bilberry, eye health, vision”

4. Use all of your keywords in your meta description, with the primary keyword as close to the front as possible. Definitely within the first 5 words of your description. The search engines don’t read your description verbatim, but can find and match them with your keyword list. So try to use them all but don’t repeat them if at all possible. Again if your meta description repeats your keywords too often the search engines might think you are keyword spamming and not list your page, so don’t do it.

5. Meta description should be between 100 and 200 characters. It is important to get a solid description of your page. Less that 100 characters and the search engine may not find it relevant enough to list. More than 200 characters and the search engines may truncate it. Which looks unprofessional on your part. Truncated meta descriptions may leave searchers with the impression that your content will be too wordy and full of you know what. Too short a description and your visitors may think there is not enough information on your page and move on to the next result. So try to get your description just right, not too long and not too short. Here is the meta description for ODF.

“Ocular Defense Formula with Lutein, Bilberry and herbs to support eye health and protect your vision from aging and oxidation. Learn how to improve your visual acuity.”

6. Line up your meta keywords up too resemble a sentence. Although search engines don’t read your keywords as a sentence verbatim, it should reflect well what your page is all about. See the meta keyword tag above.

7. Proof read your content twice. You should always proof read your work before you post for a lot of good reasons like spelling, grammar, placement and paragraph distribution. Once your page looks great proof read it again with your focus on keyword placement and repitition. You want your keywords placed in your content sparingly. What? you say. Again over use of your keywords might result in the search engines thinking you are keyword spamming. That isn’t to say you shouldn’t have too few. My rule of thumb is 3 uses of a keyword for every 300 words. This lets the search engines know that there is a lot of supporting content for the keyword.

As you are proof reading you may discover that you have a much better keyword for your meta tag than what you originally thought. For instance in ODF I discovered that I had left out the keyword “vision”. After proof reading my page I added that keyword to my list and used it a couple more times in the page.

8. Put your meta description all on one line in your html code. This will ensure that the search engines reads it all. I have noticed that some search engine results leave off the second line of a description. That may leave out some of your meta keywords if that happens.

9. Never use more than 3 words for your primary keyword (and file name). People rarely search for a keyword phrase over 3 words long. Too many words in a keyword phrase and the search engines may not find enough relevancy to list your page in the results. Two words in a keyword phrase (and file name) is ideal. For Ocular Defense Formula, I thought 2 words weren’t enough to describe the page. “Ocular Defense” would have been too vague and misleading. I could have named the page something else and optimized for those keywords, but, ODF is a product page and optimizing for something like “Eye Health” would have been misleading and probably not get listed high in the search engines.

10. Use your primary keyword in the first and last paragraph of your page. The search engines will give more relevancy to your page if they find your keywords at the beginning and the end of your page. Also your primary keyword should appear in the first 90 characters of your content.

Bonus tip - Use your primary keyword as a text link in your page only once. Not twice but definitely once. If you don’t want your visitors to leave your page make that link an “add to favorites” bookmark. On a product page this works great because you don’t want to give your visitors the opportunity to go else where.

In summary use these tips to increase your search engine rankings. Optimizing your keyword and descriptions should improve the relevancy of your page and boost your search engine rankings. Notice how I used my primary keyword and description meta tags in this last paragraph.

The greatest benefit of this new information highway is the ability to work at home supported by the necessary hardware, software, telecommunications and home office supplies of course!

Although, working from home has its pros and cons, it’s a lifestyle for many but not necessarily for everyone. People used to be almost ashamed to admit that they worked from home, but no longer. It is a well accepted fact these days. The thought of combining work and quality family life is appealing to many.

Obviously, before jumping into something like this you’ll want to ask yourself a lot of questions about whether the challenges of working from home is right for you. Questions such as the following:

* Is your workplace your primary source of friends and social connections?

* Do you crave the company of others? Will you feel lonely after a few hours at home alone?

* Do you know anyone who works at home successfully? Have you asked questions about how it really works for them?

* Have you been considering the thought of working from home for six months or longer?

* Have you considered the advantages and disadvantages of working from home?

The following reasons many people choose to work from home are:

1) Save on gas
- This is a no brainer! With high gas prices today, working from home is a blessing

2) Cut out the commute time.
- No more traffic jams and late hours.

3) Spend more time with your family.
- This is my number one reason to working from home.

4) Be the boss.
- This is MY number two reason to working from home

5) Hours are flexible.
- I can come and go as I please — if my child is sick, if he has yet another day off of school or if we want to take a two-week family vacation, I can arrange my schedule around those needs.

Finding legitimate jobs working from home is certainly important.

In this post, Joseph Nyamache writes about the “6 qualities of a good domain name”!

Choosing a good domain name is crucial to the success or failure of your business. You may wonder how something so small and slight could have an impact on your business, but the best way to compare this is to think about how important location is to an offline business? If you do not have a good location, you are likely not going to get many visitors. The same holds true for a good domain name as well.

Here, you will discover the six qualities that a good domain name must have to ensure maximum success.

1.) Memorable

A good domain name must be memorable. Yes, we have the option of bookmarking a site that we enjoy; however, the hard truth is that many people do not take advantage of bookmarking. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that your domain name is one that is easy to remember and makes an impact. It should be easy, memorable, and straight forward.

Avoid complexity and it is usually a good idea to avoid initials in most cases. The only exception to this rule would be if the letters represented the website name or business and was still easy to remember.

2.) Short and Sweet

Twenty characters is the maximum that you should use for a good domain name, ten is even better. A long and complicated domain name is not going to help you. Your best bet is to keep it short and sweet. A great domain name is less than ten characters; a good domain name is less than twenty characters. A bad domain name goes over twenty characters.

3.) Be Choosy On Your Extension

There are several domain extensions available to you such as .com, .net, .org, .tv, .info, .gov and so on. However, some of these work better than others and are more memorable at the same time. It is important to understand that some extensions also have restrictions such as .gov is reserved specifically for government websites. The .com domain name extension is the best by far, because it is the most widely used.

The .net extension is the second best, but be prepared most people will type .com before they will .net if they cannot remember which extension you use. The type of extension you use might also have a bearing on the type of website. Some people have come to expect certain things when a particular extension. For example, .org is typically used by not-for-profit organization and educational websites. The .info extensions are generally used for informational websites.

4.) Spelling Means Everything

A good domain name contains only words that are easy to pronounce, have a good combination of words or letters that are used in every day language, and does not contain foreign words that may be difficult to non-native speakers.

5.) Tells a Story

A good domain name should be descriptive and tell a story. In other words, when your visitors, customers, or potential customers see your domain name they should instantly be able to tell what they are going to find. For instance, if it is your business, a business name is good.

6.) Avoid Fancy Symbols

It is never a good idea to use numbers or hyphens within your domain name. Even if your domain name is memorable, many people will not pay attention to the symbols, which could lead them to someone else’s website.

Having a difficult to spell domain name could cause you some trouble. Again, many do not even make use of bookmarks; therefore, if your domain name is hard to spell, they may end up at a competitor’s website.

Have you thought about ways to grow your business? Trying new things and and taking your skills to the next level is always important.

For a successful business, it’s essential to cultivate relationships by networking. Networking is meeting people and having the ability to tell them who you are and what you do in a precise and interesting manner.

Networking is referring people with a need to other reliable people and businesses. It is unselfishly helping others while you actively promote and meet new potential clients and contacts. It is a network of people who refer you and vice versa. It is a way to help other people as well as others helping you. Remember what goes around, comes around. Don’t network for purely selfish reasons, it will show, and the results will be far less effective. It should go without saying that you must volunteer to reciprocate.

Your networking success will be enhanced if you enjoy people and do not have any reservations about expressing yourself. By networking you can meet fascinating and interesting people. Introduce yourself and tell others what your specialty in business is. Make friends and help one another. Networking group members usually turn to each other when they require information or products.

The following is a terrific business networking system to join… http://www.ryze.com

In this post, Jim Bruce writes about “Testing your way to greater conversions & Internet success!

Testing your website pages, especially landing pages, squeeze pages and sales pages is one of the most profitable things you can do to tweak your pages and gain higher conversions. On top of that, you can learn more about copy writing though split tests and other means of testing your web pages than any other way.

Back in the days of mail order marketing, testing sales letters and catalogs gathered more real information about new concepts and ideas than through most other methods of research at that time. In these days of the internet, the bell even rings louder.

You can test whole concepts of your pages to find out what emotional triggers and core desires your market truly respond to. Simply test two or three versions of your sales page that each focus on a separate theme or slant on the product or service. The page that pulls the most conversions will give you the answers you are looking for.

In this day of fierce online competition, testing is something you should, no MUST do to gain the highest conversions from your website and pages. If you’re not actively testing your pages, your competition will soon pass you by.

What Exactly Should You Be Testing?

The simple answer is: Everything! Everything on your pages and in your sales message is a contributing factor to your conversion rate. This includes your headline, opening paragraphs, body copy, your offer, post scripts, background color, font, font colors, images and every imaginable component of your page in between.

Volumes of information have been written about what to test and how to test your web pages. This work is extensive, so when you begin to test, I suggest you concentrate your first efforts on the three areas that have been shown to have the most impact on your sales page, the headline, the first three (or four) opening paragraphs, and your offer.

In this article, I will focus on Headlines as they are the critical element of your page.

Testing Headlines

Headline changes can have the most impact on your conversion rate and response of these three components. 75 - 80% of your visitors will never read past the headline. It doesn’t matter how wonderful you have written your sales page, if the headline doesn’t work correctly and do its job of getting people to read on, your page will be a failure.

In order for your headline to be effective, you have to discover the biggest core desires within your market to feed. The best headline test are based around the different core desires and motivating reasons why people would be interested in your product or service.

Testing different headlines around different concepts will tell you which one is more appealing to your market audience. Once you have the key concepts and desires tested and you have discovered which one works best, you then go to work tweaking your headline in more alluring and persuasive ways.

Split testing is generally used to test headlines. In the beginning, you will probably want to use simple A/B split testing but if you are dealing with high volume traffic and high price sales, you may want to consider speeding up the process with multi-variate testing. You can find out more about these tests by going to: What Is Split Testing?

What Type of Headline Format Do You Test?

There are some classic headline formats that have been shown to be effective over time that you can begin with. There’s the “If/Then” headline, “Amazing Secrets of …” headline, the “Who Else Wants to …” headline, and of course the classic “How to …” headline.

Test as many headlines as you can think up for your web page. In fact, you should never stop testing different headlines on your page. A simple 10% increase in your conversions could result in hundreds to tens of thousands of dollar or more. Testing your headlines could bring an increase of 50%, 100%, or even 200% or more in the response your web page brings.

The next time that you feel that your landing page, sales page or squeeze page should be converting better, think about testing the component of your page to increase the effectiveness and response that it should be eliciting.

Hopefully the answer to this question is YES. Starting and maintaining a subscriber list is important to your online and off line business. How else will you keep in touch with your customers? Do you want to let them know of new and updated information about your business website or blog? Of course you do!

That is why having a sign up form for subscribers to join is imperative to your business. How do you get them to subscribe?

I personally like to use Feedburner. It’s free with great features.

You need to have a subscriber’s opt-in listing to get your subscribers.

Place your email list sign-up on your website/blog prominently and other appropriate pages of your site. Whatever you do, don’t hide it! Make it easy for site visitors to find and join your email list.

Make it quick and painless. Just ask for limited information (e.g. first name, last name, email address) because subscribers are more likely to complete a short form than a longer one at the beginning of a relationship.

Make your privacy policy clear up front.

Be sure your subscribers understand how you will be using their email address and let them know what kinds of emails to expect and how often. Finally, confirm that their personal information will not be sold or traded and explain that they can decide to “opt-out” of further communications at any time.

In this post, Andre Sanchez writes about “How to use offline advertising in Internet marketing!”

Knowing how to use offline advertising in internet marketing can give you a significant advantage over your competitors, since many do not use offline methods to advertise their products.

Offline advertising is particularly relevant if you are selling a product, or offering a service, that attract customers locally. For example, you could offer a fitness aid at your local leisure center. Many leisure or fitness centers will allow you to put a free poster offering your product, but even if they charge you for it the price is usually small. Perhaps you have a golf training aid that you can advertise at your local golf club.

Local classified ads are also a good means of getting your product some local publicity. The classified ads pages or even adverts placed on selected pages of your local press, frequently provide you with local orders. The beauty of these is that they are very easy to follow up, either with back-end products or new ones. You need not even restrict yourself to the local press. How often have you seen an internet marketing advert on the national press? They are not uncommon, and although expensive, they must produce a good return.

If you have a niche website, it could be worth your while browsing round your local newsagent and checking out the magazines on display. You know the kind - all these racks upon racks of magazines on every topic you can think of. Have a word with the newsvendor and find out some of the more popular magazines that cover your niche. These could be good publications for placing your adverts, especially if they are not too expensive and they have a good circulation.

Poster campaigns can also work well. You can advertise with posters in many shopping malls, and some stores also offer you the opportunity place an A5 poster for only pennies a week. Have your own business cards printed with your internet business contact details, such as website address and email address in addition to your phone number. Put your website address on everything, and have a signature that use on all correspondence. Not just emails and forum postings, but also offline correspondence such as letters, invoices, receipts and anything else you send to other people.

Another form of offline marketing that most people have never heard of, let alone use, is buzz advertising. This type of advertising has been growing in popularity recently, especially by offline businesses. It is used extensively by some auto companies and by cosmetics companies. Buzz advertising involves getting a verbal buzz going about your website or product. Some companies pay people specifically to verbally promote their products by approaching strangers, striking up conversations and bringing up the product in the conversation.

“Say, have you heard about the latest perfume from —-!” While not yet common it is getting more popular. Of course, the buzz need not be started off by someone you have employed to do it, but you can do it yourself. You can get your family and relatives involved as well. Before you know it, everybody might be talking about your product or your great new website. That’s how YouTube and MySpace got so popular.

If you have a van or pick-up get your business name and website address painted on the site. It’s easier to get a buzz going if people see your website in their face all the time, on vehicles, on posters, in newspapers and magazines, and even chalked on walls! Well, perhaps not the last one, but that would sure get people noticing your website! Do you get the idea? Get your website name known in every way that you can.

How about a local radio slot, with you explaining the virtues and benefits of your product, service or website? Stress the benefits, and you need not restrict it to local radio. Try for a national radio slot or even TV if your business is sizeable enough. There are no restrictions to the advertising methods you can use. Hire a loudspeaker and shout it from the rooftops!

Online advertising methods are very effective in internet marketing, since they can be visible to people all round the world, but if you know how to use offline advertising it can also work very nicely for you, and bring you a lot of business you would not otherwise have.
