How to Stay Healthy Working From Home

It is truly a blessing and a privilege to  be able to work from the comfort of my home. However, I’m the first to admit that sometimes working non-stop can be detrimental to one’s health. I’ve seen many people work themselves to the bone only to burn out very quickly thereafter.

Here are 10 tips on how to stay healthy working from home. Hopefully, you’ll find a tip you can hold on to and implement into your work day:

1. Personalize your desk

Add pictures, flowers and nice smelling candles to your desk area. Find anything that will lift up your mood as you work. I like to personalize my desk with pictures of my kids. I also like to put inspiring and funny messages printed on canvases (like the one above). Quotes with aspiring words which give me motivation are my favorite things to have near my work area. These small but important things are healthy for the mind.

2. Work standing up once in a while

Your body needs circulation. Standing up while you work can provide that for you. I like to wear my ear plugs onto my smartphone and walk around my home while receiving phone calls. You can also invest in an electric standing workstation treadmill by trekdesk. I also like to get on my treadmill and stepper. That way I’m not a prisoner at my own desk. Another great idea is to keep a pair of small dumbbells nearby.

3. Don’t ever skip breakfast

They don’t say breakfast is the most important meal of the day for nothing. Skipping breakfast is like telling your body you don’t care about it. When breakfast is skipped, it only makes you select unhealthy things when cravings start to kick in. You don’t need a big breakfast just the essentials like some protein, fruits, water and/or vitamins will do. There’s nothing better than getting a healthy jump start to your day!

4. Don’t eat at your desk

Eating at your desk won’t get you up to move around. When there are times that you must eat at your desk, make sure it’s a healthy snack. I like to keep a bowl of delicious nuts or blueberries by my desk on super busy days. It’s healthy and fills my cravings until lunch and/or dinner time.

5. Say no to carbonated drinks

I might get dinged for this one (please don’t send me to hate mail) as there are millions of soda lovers out there. The reason it’s on my list is because of the sugar intake. Most people drink soda for the sugar rush but don’t realize how damaging it can be to the body. Instead, keep a glass of water by your workstation. It will quench your thirst and it’s great for you. 😉

6. Read motivational books

Keep a stack of your most favorite books by your workstation. I like to keep the Law of Attraction and business creative thinking self-help books by my desk. I find that having them near helps me stay positive throughout the day.

7. Drink lots of water

This tip is so important it deserves its own section. Spring water is an essential part of my day. I drink it constantly and my skin seems to agree. I like to add lemon, strawberries, blueberries and cucumbers to my water. If you must taste the sweetness, try adding a little bit of honey as well. It’s delicious and so good for your health!

8. Go outside for lunch

Not only is going outside for lunch a great idea, it gets you moving as well. Working from home is one thing but sitting down for hours can be strainful to the body. The beauty of working from home is that we can go outside and enjoy the day anytime we want. Not to mention the Vitamin D we need and that to me counts for something. 🙂

9. Rest when you’re sick

We’re all human and get sick from time to time. Rest and make sure you take care of YOU first! Your business can wait. Besides, who wants to work when feeling down and out? Plenty of rest will get you back on your feet ready to tackle the day.

10. Learn new skills

It is my desire to learn something new on a daily basis which get my creative juices flowing! Additionally, I know that learning a new skill will only enhance my knowledge on any topic I choose. When you learn new skills, you will feel accomplished and that my friend is good for a healthy soul.

  1. What great tips. I need to get the equipment to be able to stand and work. It looks great! Nuts are a great tip. My trainer says that we should eat a few nuts as soon as we get out of bed to start our metabolism. It helps!
